I remember the day he died.

It was December 23rd, 1982.
We got a call from Aunt Louise
who lived in the house with him.
She had found him outside,
on his way to the barn,
in the snow.

I look over this land
and try to imagine him here
on his tractor,
my grandmother picking apples to make a pie
and my Aunt Betty in the house playing the piano
for her brothers and sisters.
