For a lot of
you reading this, you might not be familiar with Columbus’ ‘drag
scene’ at all. It’s a complicated world out there. As I
explained before there are kings, females who impersonate males,
and queens, males who impersonate females, and in our case a lot
of the performers are gay or lesbian which introduces a new
element; kings are mostly performing in bars for women and
queens are mostly performing in bars for men. But, there are
some who cross over, like Alexis Stevens, a beautiful and
talented drag queen who has often emceed or performed with the
Renegades. The occurrence of females in female bars and males
in male bars only makes sense for the gay community, until now.
Something very special happened during Pride Kickoff 2011. The
Royal Renegades were invited to perform at the Axis Nightclub’s
kickoff, which features male revues. This was not only special
to the kings and queens but showed true pride and community
within these performance troupes.
