What Dan Savage did to Rick Santorum; turning his name into a dirty word, turning the tables on a bully who spreads hate and ignorance about an entire people, is more of a vindication for me than a cruel joke as some might have thought it was.  Boys like Dan, who got the shit knocked out of them for being gay and not having anyone to turn to is a direct result of liars like Rick Santorum and others.  When a government approves hate of a certain people, they approve their demise equally.  One can hold the bible up all they want and say “God says,” but god does not say.  God never said.  You said.  It was the people who wrote it.  And it is you who endorses it.   

Not long ago, a friend asked me if my parents knew of all the artistic things that I do and when I said ‘no’ he was saddened by that.  Another friend cried when I let him read The Curiosity Disease, a story about some kids who were playing a practical joke on me.  I didn’t understand, I had written it as a comedy but for my friend it was a tragedy.  He said he felt the loneliness and sadness in my words and thought of his own daughter.  My full blown interest in Dan Savage, now, goes way back, way back to teenage experience and an enlightenment that not all have the privilege to share.  As I’ve grown older I see what caused my self-destructive behaviors like anorexia, body dysmorphia, and abusive relationships.  Petty little things that happen to you as children, just kids being kids, pile up over time and come out from the cauldron of your mind like demons.
